Different Locks for Different Doors

01/31/2014 Back To Blog

Whether you moved into an already built house or had it constructed from the ground up, the one thing that you should not forget doing is making sure that the doors are properly secured. Even the safest neighborhoods can be the target of thieves and you would not want to compromise the safety of your family and your property. The good news is that there are different types of locks that you can use to ensure the physical security of your home. Read on to find out what the recommended lock types are based on the part of the house that you are securing.

How to Choose Locks Most Suited for Your Home

Here are a few tips on how you can choose a lock that is most suited for your home:

Use a cylinder lock and a deadbolt to secure your front door

A cylinder lock and a deadbolt are the minimal security features that should be installed in every home’s front door. You can upgrade it with more locks if you’d like. The front door is always a target in the eyes of criminals who can possibly break into your house, so it is a must to secure it properly.

Use lever handle locks for office doors

Lever handle locks have a push-down handle used for locking and opening the door. You can typically see these in hotel rooms and other commercial establishments. Instead of rotating a knob, you simply have to push down a lever to open or close the door.

Use high-security padlocks for rooms which you would not like other to gain access to

If you have a shed with your power tools in it or if there’s an area in your office which you would not like others to gain access to, you can use high-security padlocks. These are more difficult to tamper with than regular padlocks, so the things inside should be safe.

Know the difference between knob locks and cam locks

You can also use knob locks which are traditional types of locks that have a locking cylinder located inside. These are not recommended for front door installations, because they do not provide the same level of security provided by dead bolts. Cam locks, on the other hand, are used in filing cabinets so they’re often seen in offices.

As you can see, there is a particular kind of lock suited for different situations – so it is quite easy to choose which ones to install in various entry points in your home.
